Gary La Grange Shihan at his dojo in Woodmead, Johannesburg

Gary La Grange Shihan started karate in 1975 in the Vaal Triangle. He started training as a student of Johnny Loots Shihan and went on to attain his Nidan (2nd Dan) rank under Peter Brandon Hanshi in 1992 in Johannesburg.

His Sandan (3rd Dan) Yondan (4th Dan) and Godan (5th Dan) ranks were subsequently obtained under Saiko Shihan Goshi Yamaguchi in 1996, 2001 & 2004.

Today he is the Provincial Head for Goju Kai South Africa in the Gauteng Province and is based at the Woodmead dojo.

He says: “The experience of training under Saiko Shihan Goshi Yamaguchi for the first time in 1992 was a revelation and it left a lasting impression on me.

I received my Godan ranking in 2005, under the guidance of Hanshi Peter Brandon and my sensei. I had never imagined that I would be ranked as a 5th Dan in the art of Goju Kai Karate Do!

The Yamaguchi school of Goju Kai Karate Do became my path in life and my passion has grown with every training opportunity. I have many wonderful memories of training at seminars with Saiko Shihan. Every opportunity to train with Hanshi Peter Brandon is a special occasion and his karate teaching has shaped my karate in every way.

To this day I am still very honoured to be accepted into the ranks of a system with such a wonderful heritage that stretches from our own dojo all the way to the IKGA Hombu dojo in Japan.”
