6th Karatedo Gojukai World Championships

The 6th KIndia 2013 Logoaratedo Gojukai World Championships took place in Mumbai, India from 10-17 December 2013. This is the biggest event in Gojukai throughout the world and takes place every 4 years.

Gojukai SA has a proud history in this global event. We’ve always featured among the top nations as medal winners and in 2009 we lifted the trophy as overall winners of the Championship when we hosted it in Cape Town. Saiko Shihan Goshi Yamaguchi called the tournament the best ever and we remain proud of the superb organization and management of our teams that helped to showcase our world class capabilities and the beauty of our country.

With this in mind, 150 competitors along with 70 loyal supporters arrived in Mumbai prepared and ready to defend our title and to reinforce our previous success.

The camaraderie, loyalty and respect shown amongst every team member and supporter was incredible to witness. Everyone came together as one big South African family. Team spirit was high throughout and Team SA even showed their winning pedigree from the stands and ringside seats. The injured, upset or demotivated were quickly helped back up by a Doctor, manager, coach or willing supporter. The willingness by everyone to go the extra mile and to extend a kind hand is just one of the reasons why we are such a formidable and powerful unit!

Our South African warriors performed exceptionally well. All of this helped us to become the first Gojukai nation to successfully defend the overall cup for the most medals taken.

What a fantastic achievement! Congratulations to absolutely everyone involved.

The breakdown of medals, medal winners and events can be found on the official IKGA website.

It must be said that none of the above would have been possible without an enormous amount of planning and work. This tour was by far the largest and most testing event that Gojukai SA has had to organize to date.

Organisers visited India two years in advance to prepare the way. Visas, uniforms, travel kits, flights, accommodation, transport, meals, training, tournament admin, tours, safety and medical supervision for 239 people had to be pre-arranged, tracked, synchronized, paid for and managed.

The organizers are therefore commended for their huge contribution to Gojukai SA. There are many, many more who all contributed in one way or another and for this we once again say thank you.

We are not from a first world country and many of our students are on the breadline. Yet time and again we rise to our collective challenges as a family with great Honour, Loyalty and Respect. We always arrive as an army of warrior’s young and old, united in our determination to demonstrate the effect that passion and commitment have on the human spirit, to our IKGA family.

The next World Championship will take place in Canada in 2017 and many of our karateka are unaware that our preparations have already begun. Some say that Team Gojukai SA are unstoppable. We remain determined to prove them right.
